Challenge

The University of Newcastle’s NUspace building required complete renewal of its 750 m² rooftop waterproofing system. Beyond replacing the existing membrane, the project required attention to concrete cracks, drainage falls and the detailing around roof penetrations, outlets and perimeter junctions. Existing cappings and wall sheeting also required modification to accommodate the new membrane terminations. A coordinated approach was needed to address these elements in accordance with the specialist waterproofing remedial design.

solutions

RCR Services removed the existing membrane and mechanically prepared the concrete rooftop, treating cracks, repairing hobs and reforming falls to promote drainage. A new SILCOR polyurethane liquid membrane system was installed across the roof, with dedicated detailing around penetrations and drainage outlets and upturns at vertical surfaces. A UV-resistant protective coating completed the exposed surface, while new perimeter and wall flashings protected the membrane terminations. Together, these works renewed the rooftop’s barrier against water ingress, helping protect the structure and university spaces below.
