Challenge
The outdoor terrace at Lort Smith Animal Hospital required extensive refurbishment after the existing waterproofing system reached the end of its service life. Deteriorated waterproofing, bedding screed and terrace finishes needed to be completely removed, along with existing paving, garden beds and retaining structures, while preserving the structural concrete slab beneath. With the hospital remaining operational throughout the project, careful planning was essential to maintain safe access and minimise disruption. Plumbing and electrical services also required coordinated removal and reinstatement, adding complexity to the staged works and requiring close collaboration between multiple trades.

RCR Services delivered a staged terrace reconstruction, combining controlled demolition with a complete waterproofing upgrade. Following removal of the existing terrace construction, the structural slab was prepared, cracks were repaired and a reinforced bedding screed was installed to establish suitable drainage falls. A two-layer bitumen membrane system and new flashings were then installed, followed by pedestal paving to create a durable, low-maintenance outdoor surface. Close coordination of construction, plumbing and electrical works allowed the hospital to remain operational throughout the project. The completed refurbishment restored waterproofing integrity, improved drainage and provided a functional terrace designed for long-term performance.
