Objectives
Sealife Melbourne Aquarium faced severe roofing issues that needed to be addressed urgently. Investigations showed that the existing membrane on the roof was connected to the insulation with an adhesive.
We recommended leaving the existing membrane as removing the membrane would have caused numerous issues when coming to apply the new torch-on membrane. Leaving the existing membrane acts as a base layer for the new membrane to adhere to which will increase the longevity of the new membrane.
solutions
Our solution was to implement a two-layer Torch on Membrane system to the Sealife Aquarium bitumen roof. We proposed to clean and prepare the existing membrane and heat weld the base layer directly over the top. This protected the insulation from the heat when applying the new membrane. We then proposed to fix the first layer of membrane using Hilti fixings through to the structural slab before heat welding the final mineral membrane coat.
This system provided excellent dimensional stability and elastic performance for the roof, proving to be the most effective and reliable solution.
