Challenge
This project presented several unique challenges. The most significant was the removal of the large Perspex viewing window. Weighing over 800kg, its extraction demanded precise rigging and careful coordination within a tight and sensitive space. The team also had to navigate the restricted working environment of the enclosure, avoiding disruption to the structure and surrounding exhibits. In addition, the existing steel frame showed signs of deterioration and corrosion, requiring thorough remediation. Ensuring the long-term waterproofing of the enclosure was critical—not only for structural protection but also for the safety and wellbeing of the penguins returning to their habitat.

RCR Services mobilised its experienced scaffolding and rigging team to safely remove the viewing window with no disruptions or incidents. Once access was gained, our remedial specialists carried out detailed steel repairs, grinding back rust and applying a high-performance epoxy coating to restore strength and durability. To secure long-term watertightness, a specialised engineered waterproofing system was applied to the steel frame. The Perspex window was then carefully reinstated and professionally sealed to ensure structural integrity and watertight performance. The result was a seamlessly executed project that met both functional and environmental needs.
The Little Penguins have since returned to their newly upgraded enclosure and are thriving in their refreshed environment. RCR Services are proud to have played a part in delivering another successful, high-quality result.
